If Jesus Had a Map

A Map of the world from the year Jesus was born

So the birth of Christ is not a fairytale, it is factual. Some do not believe that the baby born was the Savior of the world, but there are few who still dispute his birth. So, take a look at this map, and read the article. This transports us to a time when things were very, very different. How does reflecting on the world as it was at the time of Jesus's birth give credence to the argument that it is imperative that we learn Literature, History and Religion together? Use examples from the text. Your entry must be at least 350 words. You may use outside sources if you wish.

  1. The world was a very different place in the time of Jesus' birth. A person cannot understand anything very well if they do not know what is going on around them in their own town, country or even globally. Strabo was a famous scholarly guide during the time of Jesus. He recorded information of “an Egyptian priest named Moses” led a group of followers who believed that God is “one thing which encompasses us all." This was a place where Jerusalem was standing present day. He recorded information of the history of the Jews and the geography of the world. He studied in the art of rhetoric, grammar, and philosophy while teaching of Aristotle. With the knowledge of the geography of the world Strabo's eyes had been opened to the influences of other cultures and traditions. This knowledge allowed him to truly see how the world works. By learning History, Religion, and Literature all together students and all people will have a more clear understanding of the world. To understand the history of an area, it allows a researcher to understand why events happened or the reasoning behind traditions and celebrations. The Romans had not even built the coliseums at this time in history and the second Holy Temple was built in Jerusalem. In our world today we can look back to history to see how these things developed and why. Learning the history of a certain group of people diversifies one's thoughts and opens them to a better understanding of a different place. By studying the religion of people such as Strabo had, he was able to understand the beliefs of the people while understanding their history as well. Religion is a major influence the actions of many people which ties into their history as well. Literature allows a person to express the history and religion of the a group of people. When each of these aspects are learned together a person can understand and record the history accurately for generations to come. Without learning these aspects it would be extremely difficult for any person to express their ideas and facts. Learning these subjects together strengthens the capability of the people and will better inform many people.

    1. I agree that literature is a huge form of expression, both religious and historical. And we do have the opportunity to look back at historic events to see not only what but also why.

    3. I like how you explain how we formed our understanding by studying religion, literature, and history all together; how it formed the great thing they had back then and how it realities to now. It could have never happened without learning those three things,

  2. Today many people have lost touch with the history of the world, and in doing so, they have lost many important connections. So often, we do not think about everything that happened at a certain time, we just focus of one aspect of the world. If we think about the civil war in America, we do not take into account what was happening in other places of the world. When we read a book, we do not think about what happened at the time period it was written, or the background of the author. When did we loose touch with this? Is it an issue with how students are being taught? But, in order to fully understand an event, we need to learn literature, history, and religion together. Not only at a Catholic School, but at even at public education facilities. So that we can fully comprehend the fullness of an event, religion should be an essential part of the lessons. The birth of Jesus should be openly discussed, whether or not He is the Lord should not be forced on anyone. ALL religious aspects of an event should be analyzed, not just Christianity. To add to that, let's say we are studying literature. In order to understand the book, the reader needs to know the 'SOAPSTONES' so that the message is clear. Also, if, in the book, they speak about the the persecution of Jews by Hitler, then a background on why Jews were being discriminated against would be helpful for a better analysis of the book. If these three elements are not together then so part will be lost. In the time of Jesus, Strabo documented the geographical aspects of the world. This gives us an insight to the way the world was running. Currently, we have so much information at our fingertips, but far to often we do not connect to dots to answer the 'why' questions that arise from analyzing literature, history, or religion. If we learn all of these subjects together then we can come to know the importance of the 'little' details in what we are studying.

    1. I like how you opened it up by saying any people have lost touch with the history of the world, because I agree completely with you. Also that we have so much information at our fingertips, but we do not connect the dots to find the answers.

    2. I agree with how people are loosing touch with the history of the world, it is not good to only focus on one aspect of history as we often do. This really may present a problem in the future of our understanding of history, as we should never forget history.

    3. I completely agree with the ideas of Jesus being taught in public schools. I also incorporated that into my blog. Jesus is one of the biggest and most influential figures in human history. Even if you do not believe in his teachings, he must be acknowledged as a human who did change the world because that is proven in history, especially the Bible.

  3. The world has changed so much since Jesus was born. When Jesus was born the time was completely different. For instance, we don't know exactly what happened during that time period but we know great things happened from the different stories that have been told and passed down. Many people believe Jesus is the born Savior, whereas others have a hard time believing that this one person can be capable of being in charge of the whole world and performing many miracles. Strabo was one documenter during the period of Jesus who documented Jesus and his followers. The documentation of the birth of Jesus has been explained in many different ways but every story tends to be basically the same. Being brought up as a catholic and going to a catholic school the story of Jesus is is something that has been taught early on so the belief is strong and true.
Stories usually change after being told through so many people and so many years but the story of Jesus birth basically stays strong and true. The story might get mixed up when they are passed on and on but everyone who wants to know the story of Jesus and how he was born pretty much know what the moral of the story actually is. Going through 12 years in catholic schooling I firmly believe the story to be true but i am certain that over different periods of time the true story has significantly changed so only the true account could be through the ones that actually lived it. Strabo was known to be found recording historic Jewish people and the geography of around the different areas of the world. To do his different types of research on geography, Strabo spent some of his time in Egypt, around the south to Ethiopia, west to Italy, and to Armenia. He was also knows as the "most widely traveled geographer" during his time. He also taught Aristotle while he studied the art of rhetoric, grammar, and philosophy. Strabo was also a geographer. He always did a lot around the different areas of the world.

    1. I agree that stories often change overtime, but thanks to the documentation of Jesus' birth we know what happened. I also like that you connected Strabo to your blog.

  4. The human world achieved every accomplishment in history solely on the means of learning new things about the world that housed them. In Jesus's time the world was still in a primitive state, man did not know much about what still remained to be discovered. Literature, history, and religion shaped the thoughts of every person on earth in some way. Every man, and future generations of men, lived to learn about their past and how to improve the future, and literature and religion were very large influences on this pursuit. There was a man named Strabo, a geographer who travelled the world and studied culture and land. He made many accounts of people and places and permanently set them into history through literature. Christ's accounts were also written down in scripture. This history was then studied by means of reading literature to learn about the past happenings in which these accounts were recorded. Thus, the intellect of the past world was passed to the next generation and was improved. This occurred numerous times until we reached what is accomplished in our world today. It's very important to learn about the past, even today, to better the future. The most intellectual people have a good understanding of history. Religion inspired scripture, because religion was the number one aspect of a man's life during the time, it governed the life's of almost all people. We learn history through religion. We learn history through literature. If man does not continue to learn about the past then some past unsolved mysteries will never be solved. If we dive deep into the religion, literature, and history of our world we will find the answers to many untold stories and many untold secrets that may benefit our world today. This is why the continued study of religion, literature, and history is significant to the future. To advance knowledge there must already be knowledge present.

    1. I think that your look on history explains why religion and history must be related. You explained that looking into history is man trying to improve for the future. In order to improve as a person, religion must be present. There must be a boundary of morals. Looking back on history and setting up morals improves life.

  5. History, religion, and literature may seem to be different genres of learning that have little to none relevance to one another, but if one looks into history, it is apparent that each of these subjects are related through the reality that they all contribute to the current world. In today's world, these subjects of learning may be different they were in the past, but each of these subjects work together to shape the modern world. This truth is not just visible in the world we see today. It was perhaps most apparent in the time of Jesus Christ's birth and life. In that specific time of human history, past history, religion and literature were closely linked together due to the life of Jesus. This linkage proved to shape the world, and it continues to shape the world day after day. Just as this article about the time of Jesus represents, Jesus's birth is not just an act of fictional literature. It is rather a piece if history. It can be proven, there is no doubt that Jesus was as real the people of his time and as the people of this time. This is why his life should not only be studied in history, but it should be an imperative part of the curriculum for the subject as well the subjects of literature and obviously religion. This is not a biased request due to my faith, but rather it is to conjure the best out of each learner because there was no man in human history who has made more of an impact in all three subjects of literature, history, and religion. The Bible has remained a historical reference for over two thousand years for not only historical events pertaining to religion, but it also is a reference to events that do not directly pertain to religion. The Bible also has remained the best selling book in history just proving that religion, history, and literature are not separated subjects but rather directly connect subjects that must be taught together not only in Catholic schools but also in public areas of learning. Jesus and religion is a part of history, not just an imaginary figure made up to fill a void in the lives of the weak. That is why these subjects must be taught together.
